Who we are

The name ‘Dr. Spiess Chemische Fabrik GmbH’stands for a tradition-based specialists with international standing and a high level of competence, providing service on a partnership basis. Our firm was established in 1987, when the thiochemical activities of
‘C. F. Spiess & Sohn GmbH & Co’ were hived off to set up an independent company. What started off solely as a research project after the Second World War became an individual branch of the company in 1954. Today we are a wholly owned subsidiary of ‘GECHEM GmbH & CO KG’, which acquired its shares from ‘Spiess-Urania Chemicals GmbH’ in Hamburg in 2006. Ever since the 1950s, we have been successfully specialising in the production and marketing of fine chemicals used in the chemical industry as intermediate products.

Taking a look back

As a middle-sized family concern we have remained true to our roots for over 150 years. We look back with pride on our long-standing tradition. Carl Friedrich Spiess, spurred on by family ties with Justus von Liebig, set up a business manufacturing clay earth pigments in Kleinkarlbach in 1861. Initially, the company mainly produced paints and varnishes and quickly became leading producer in this field. After the First World War, the production of pesticides andfertilisers was added due to the company’s location – in a traditional wine-producing area and on the famous ‘German Wine Route’. This area of activity proved to be so profitable that it soon developed into the new core business. Over many turbulent decades, the family business has always had the right instinct for ever-changing demands and has successfully withstood crises and world wars. The company has remained in the original premises in Kleinkarlbach a further manufacturing facility has since been added in Alsbach-Hähnlein. Today we are an established traditional concern for liquid and solid materials in the chemical and chemical-technical field. Our experience spans 150 years, enabling us to offer our customers broad-based know-how in chemical production and for the next 150 years. We look forward to the future with confidence.
