Thio-chemicals for hair cosmetics and depilation

In the cosmetics industry, thio-glycolates, other thio-salts, thio-acids and mercaptans are primarily used for two things: On the one hand to change the structure of hair. A good example is hair-straightening or hair-perming products. On the other hand, people also use (other) organic thio-compounds to completely remove hair, for example in depilation products.

Used in hair cosmetics

Certain thio-chemicals have the ability to break the disulfide bonds in the keratin structure of hair. By targeting the breakage of disulfide bonds, thio-glycolates render the hair malleable and ensure a permanent re-shaping.
Hair straightening means that frizzy and curly hair is straightened. During the de-frizzing process on thio-glycolate basis, the product basis and the required steps are essentially similar to those used in hair-perming treatments (a chemical conversion of the keratin parts of the hair, re-shaping on rollers with a large diameter, oxidation and neutralisation).
Apart from ammonium thio-glycolate, hair-perming products often also contain potassium thio-glycolate. While it has similar characteristics but people sometimes prefer it if a lower PH value is required.

Used for depilation

In addition, thio-glycolates, certain other thio-acids and at times also mercaptans are able to soften and break down the proteins in the hair.

This makes the complete removal of hair easier as the hair weakens and dissolves. For this reason, certain thio-compounds are also used in products such as depilation creams (also referred to as hair removal creams).

Hair removal creams often contain potassium or calcium thio-glycolate. As in the case of hair cosmetic products, it is essential to strictly adhere to the correct concentration and exposure time to avoid skin irritations.
